Role of TRAI on Mobile Number Portability
Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) project that was one of the telecom sector's proposals for the future development and it was under progress from August 2008.
TRAI authorized and the Mobile Number Portability will be introduced shortly in India by end of this year 2010 or first quarter of 2011; the country's Telecommunications Department is under its way to execute.
What is Mobile Number Portability or MNP?
Number Portability?, What is Mobile Number Portability? It is nothing but mobile user can switch from one service provider to another one retaining the same mobile number without any changes. MNP helps mobile user to get required telecom tariff as needed, mobile user has not necessary to change the mobile number or submit the card to discontinue MNP service.
How Mobile Number Portability or MNP works?
Number Portability example is just like a customer has Vodafone number and would like to switch to Aircel service provider retaining the same SIM card and same mobile number without any changes. This MNP facility can help the customer, the change is expected to increase competition among the service provider which finally helps all. MNP also helps new mobile operators who are moving out their services as an end user will find it easier to move from one operator to another based on desired tariff per their requirement. However after an initial switch, there will not be significant shifts by subscribers from one operator to another.
How To Switch or Change One service provider to another?

If an end user who would like to change their service operator / network provider without change of number, then they just can send an SMS from own mobile phone to 1900. It will be taken 7 days to process for the change of new network service provider from exist one. Customer number will be systematically terminated by current service provider and transferred to Other Telecom Service Provider as part of the mobile number portability request applied by you.
