Church of St. Francis of Assisi

The Church of St.Francis of Assisi is in Panaji, Goa. This is a Convent of St. Francis of Assisi built in 1521. The church and convent were built by Franciscan friars. The Church of St.Francis of Assisi is situated in the same compound, where Se Cathedral stands. It was dedicated to the Holy Ghost in 1602 AD. It was a chapel. Later, it was modified into a church in 1521 and consecrated to the Holy Spirit on 2nd August, 1602.


The structure is built of laterite blocks and is lime-plastered. The interiors are Mosaic Corinthian in style, the walls are illustrated with scenes from Bible and vault ribbed.he church has a belfry and a sacristy towards the north of the main altar. The main altar dedicated to St.Francis. The church displays artifacts, paintings and pieces of Hindu temple sculptures from Goa.


The scenes in this church include:
(1) An angel revealing to his mother that she would beget a child who would become a great saint
(2) His birth
(3) His first anointment
(4) Praying at the church of St. Dominica when Jesus commands him to support his kingdom.
(5) The saint taking the oath and joining the Dominican odder.
(6) His visit to the Sultan of Damascus.
(7) The saint showing his wounds to Pope Gregory IX. In the first floor on the western side, is the choir, which has amidst carved wooden panels, portrait from Franciscan hagiology.
